The Cat's Out Of the Bag!

So, I'm sitting here at the Washington Bar Exam, 'cuz I'm working (site captain for all the techs) and I'm watching/listening to the audio commentary for Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest and I learned something new!

The phrase "the cat's out of the bag" comes from pirates!

The cat refers to the cat of nine tails, which was used for disciplining pirates and sailors. Quoting from the audio commentary (I'm not sure which of the 2 screenwriters is saying it): "The idea was if they took the cat out of the bag, it had to be used. Something had gone wrong, a punishment had been meted out, and that's where the expression, 'The cat's out of the bag,' comes from."

Isn't that interesting?? =D
